Civic Engagement

According to the Migration Policy Institute, New Jersey has one of the largest populations of lawful permanent residents who are eligible to naturalize in the country, with 370,000 eligible residents. Yet many green card holders who are eligible to become citizens face barriers when seeking to naturalize, such as the increasingly high application fees and the unavailability of affordable language and civics classes. National campaigns have focused on increasing access to support for those applying and increasing outreach and information to those who qualify to naturalize.

NJAIJ urges that our state partner with local and state advocates and service providers in a campaign to increase the naturalization rate of our state and lessen the barriers that prevent eligible New Jerseyans from becoming American citizens.
